My name is Nick Sng and I’m a Freeman Asian Scholar from Singapore. My major is still undecided, but I’m thinking of pursuing a University Major in Human-Centered Design, combining courses from Psychology, Studio Art, Anthropology, Computer Science and IDEAS. I work at the Fries Center for Global Studies as a Media Assistant, assisting TAs and students who need help setting up the audio/video recording devices that are available to all students, be it for their Moodle assignments or own personal projects.

As an international student, my goals and values are very aligned with those of FCGS as a hub for intercultural and multilingual engagement. I am currently pursuing Elementary Korean and hope to study abroad for a semester (or two!). Even though I am already “studying abroad” here in the US, I would always advocate for more cross-cultural immersion to expand our mental faculties beyond the classroom. Coming to the US has been a huge step outside my comfort zone, but it certainly isn’t the first, nor will it be the last; I believe the things we fear the most are usually the things we learn most from. Indeed, some of my most important lessons came from my Military Service back in Singapore.
Photography is not only my job but also my hobby. I photograph landscapes, portraits, architecture, products — just about anything.
Apart from FCGS, I also work as a Photography Intern for Wesleyan’s Communication Department. When you see me at some of the events on campus with my camera, be sure to check News@Wesleyan for the photos! Recently, my photo has won Best Photo for Landscape at the annual Wes and the World Photo Contest. You may find my photo and the rest of the other winners’ hung on the wall in FISK 201. I am also looking to provide my photography (and possibly videography) services for those who need a headshot for their Linkedin profile or for personal projects, so feel free to contact me!
All in all, I’m very grateful to be part of the wonderful and diverse community at Wes and hope that my job at FCGS and as a Photographer can help facilitate the thriving cultural exchange at Wes!
