Decolonial feminism considers the relation between gender and coloniality and seeks to disrupt the power relations of colonialism, settler colonialism and racial capitalism. The symposium will feature talks by Fania Noël, Bhakti Shringarpure and Afiya Zia.

Bhakti Shringapure is Associate Professor of English & Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at U-CONN, editor-in-chief of Warscapes magazine, and author of Cold War Assemblages: Decolonization to Digital (Routledge, 2019). She is Series Editor of Decolonize That! Handbooks for the Revolutionary Overthrow of Embedded Colonial Ideas for OR Books, and was a Fulbright U.S. Scholar (Kenya) in 2019.

Afiya Zia is author of three books, including Faith and Feminism in Pakistan (2018). Dr. Zia works with women’s and human rights groups and prodemocracy movements in Pakistan and Toronto and is Frank B. Weeks Visiting Assistant Professor of Feminist, Gender and Sexualities Studies at Wesleyan.

Fania Noël is an activist-organizer with the Mwasi Afrofeminist Collective, co-creator of the Decolonial Summer Camp in France, founder of AssiégéEs (Besieged), a political publishing project led by women, queer and trans people of color, and author of Afro-communautaire: Appartenir à nous-mêmes (Afro-Community: To Belong to Ourselves), 2019. Noël is also a doctoral candidate in Sociology at the New School and this year’s recipient of an International Fellowship from the American Association of University Women.
