The Critical Language Scholarship: Learn a Language and Live Abroad!

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) applications are opening soon! The CLS is an opportunity for American college and university students to study and delve into languages and cultures to promote with global engagement, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Every summer, undergraduates and graduate students enrolled at U.S. institutions nationwide embark on an immersive eight-to-ten week program at intensive study abroad institutes. At these institutions, they focus on learning and mastering one of fourteen languages. The program’s primary goal is to encourage quick language acquisition and vital cross-cultural competence in regions that are vital to U.S. national security and economic prosperity.

CLS Spark is a virtual initiative under the CLS program that provides opportunities for undergraduate students for the study of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian at a beginner level. This program seeks to use the vast resources of online language learning to study languages they might not have access to on their campuses.

The application deadline is Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 8:00 pm Eastern Time.
