This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education aims to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences. The Gamelan from Java to Wesleyan: Open Rehearsal of gamelan music and dance with an introduction

This lunch is in celebration of campus applicants to the Critical Language Scholarship, who submitted their applications to this competitive program for the November 15 national deadline. CLS funds intensive summer language study abroad in 14 different languages that the US government has identified as critical to the future of the country: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.

In Germany, the 11th of November is “Sankt Martinstag” – and we would like to celebrate it with you! St Martin’s day marks the beginning of harvesting and shall remind us of being generous with other people. People usually come together at a bonfire in the evening, walk down the streets with lanterns and torches and sing lantern songs together. We warmly invite you to spend the afternoon with us, crafting our own lanterns from empty milk cartons and eating “Weckmänner*”, a sweet bread roll with raisins. As one part of a series of events surrounding the Oddfellows Playhouse production of Journey to the West this fall, Allison Bernard, a scholar of early modern Chinese literature, will give a public talk introducing the 16th century novel (Journey to the West, or Xiyou ji 西遊記, attributed to Wu Cheng’en) that inspired the Zimmerman script and Oddfellows production. The talk will be an opportunity for cast members, audience members, and the Middletown community to learn more about the cultural and literary significance of the 16th century source text—a text that is regarded as one of China’s greatest classical novels—as well as the many adaptations and recreations of the novel and its story from the 16th century to the present day.
Talk with Hafizah Augustus Geter

The Russell House Reading Series is honored to be hosting Hafizah Augustus Geter. Hafizah is a Nigerian-American poet, writer, and literary agent born in Zaria, Nigeria and raised in Akron, Ohio, and Columbia, South Carolina. Her striking debut poetry collection, “Un-American,” was nominated for a 2021 NAACP Image award, and a finalist for the 2021 PEN Open Book Award. Her recently-published memoir “The Black Period: On Personhood, Race, and Origin” is a genre-bending work of lyrical prose; it is both an intimate memoir on her life as the queer daughter of a Muslim Nigerian immigrant and a Black American visual artist, as well as a poignant examination of the ways that race and identity have shaped her life in America.

Wesleyan Refugee Project Information Session

How do displaced refugees and immigrants navigate their way in the US legal and education system. What resources are in place to support them? What are ways in which we, the Wesleyan community, can offer help to alleviate the burden even a little? Come learn more about the work that Wesleyan Refugee Project and Wesleyan English Language Learners program do in collaboration with local organizations. Tutors will discuss their initial interest, experiences, and lessons they learned from working with refugees of various ages. Information will be provided on how to get involved with both organizations. Legal aid researchers will discuss the current resources available to refugees and immigrants!
The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful of the World Cup

The World Cup has always been more than a soccer (i.e. football) tournament. It has stirred emotions in millions of human beings all over the world since the 1930s. It has given voice to the masses as well as the powerful. It has brought people together and torn them apart. In this (informal) conversation about the history of the World Cup, we will be highlighting some of the most interesting moments of this tournament: the good, the bad, and the beautiful! We will be looking at photos and watching videos of extraordinary athletic feats alongside political and cultural manifestations that took place on and off the pitch.
