IIE Emergency Student Fund to Assist Students Studying in the U.S Affected by Recent Crises

The IIE has set up an emergency grant of between $2,000 – $5,000 to help students with urgent financial needs due to current crises so that they may continue their studies in the U.S.The Fund was creates to support students whose ability to continue their studies during the current academic year has been affected by particular crises and natural disasters. 

At the time of its establishment, applications are requested from accredited U.S. institutions for students from:

Australia: Students from the states of New South Wales and Victoria whose ability to pay for their education in the United States is affected by the brushfires in those states in December and January.

China: Students from Hubei Province whose ability to pay for their education in the United States is affected by the outbreak of Wuhan Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Students from other parts of China with demonstrable needs related to Wuhan Coronavirus may also be considered.

Philippines: Students from Luzon whose ability to pay for their education in the United States is affected by volcanic activity from Taal Volcano.

Turkey: Students from Elazig and Malatya provinces whose ability to pay for their education in the United States is affected by the earthquake that struck near Sivrice on January 24, 2020.

Accredited U.S. campuses can nominate up to ten students in total for whom help is needed to complete the Spring 2020 semester. Students cannot self-nominate and must be nominated by an international student advisor or other campus official. 

IIE expects U.S. institutions nominating students affected by the above crises to help address the students’ urgent financial needs through tuition waivers, scholarships, and other forms of assistance. Please secure additional institutional support prior to submitting your nomination. 

Deadline: Wednesday, February 19, 2020, 11:59 PM EST.

Decisions will be sent to students, copying nominators in mid-March. Please note, while nominators will be copied on the nomination emails, payments will be made directly to students.

Eligibility

To be considered for an ESF award, nominated students must: 

  • Demonstrate to campus officials that their financial ability to continue their U.S. studies has been seriously disrupted as a result of one of the above crises;
  • Be enrolled for the Spring 2020 semester;
  • Be in good academic standing, as defined by the host campus;
  • Have the appropriate non-immigration visa status (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or asylees are not eligible for an ESF)

U.S. host campuses nominating students are expected to provide additional emergency assistance to nominated students. This can be through tuition waivers, full or partial scholarships, housing , stipends, loans, work study, or other forms of support.
